Amy’s Farm Field Trip

We had a lot of fun at Amy’s Farm on Friday.  We got to pet Grandma Tina, the big Jersey cow.  Later, the kids was able to milk her too.

We fed the pigs, pet the sheep and goats, walked through the vegetable gardens, smelled some onions, and lots more.

Easter Egg Hunt

“THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM” – Our students were excited about searching for Easter eggs throughout our classroom.  Each student found 2-3 eggs each.  I think they had some fun.

I enjoyed watching the expressions on their faces.

Jungle Beats

During Music the other day, we “dropped the beat” with a song called “Jungle Beats”.  The students enjoyed it.  There was a lot of movement during the song.

Planting Seeds

Here we are planting some sunflower seeds.  We will be observing the stages of plant growth over the next few weeks.

Homework:

Fry Words:  All kindergarten students in  LEUSD must know the first 50 Fry words.  Please study the first 50 sight words with your child as seen on http://kinderroom.com/fry-word-list.html .  Students may not sound out the words.  They must read them immediately as sight words.  Good luck!

Each student will move on to the next list once they have passed with a 10 out of 10.  Always look at your child’s reading list on the days we test to see what words your child struggled with.

  1. Read to or with your child 15 minutes each day.  Point to the words as you read.  Your child will start to recognize the words that show up more than once on the page.  Also make sure that the reading selection is at the kindergarten or first grade level.
  2. “see” worksheet – follow the directions on worksheet.  Instead of pasting the letters from the bottom, you may simply write the letters in the squares.
  3.  Consonant Sounds worksheet – p. 85 – 86 “Basic Phonics Skills”.  Follow the directions on worksheet.
  4. Self-Portrait Project

Please use the attached cut-out to create a self-portrait.  The parents obviously may assist with this project.  Many people have actually used material to use as clothes.  Also, some students used a Xerox copy of their face for the head of the self-portrait.  Be creative and have fun.  Due Friday.  We will use this for a writing assignment in class.

Examples from last year’s project below:

Leprechaun Video

Another video for a fun writing assignment in class.

Please Note:  Mr. B performed all the dancing.  No stunt doubles were used in making this video.  :-)   Not!

Leprechaun Traps

 LEPRECHAUN TRAPS – FUN PROJECT

DUE:  THURSDAY, MARCH 15TH

Oh my!  St. Patrick’s Day is approaching, and the Leprechauns are on the loose!  You and your family need to make a trap to catch them!  Leprechauns are tricky fellows, so you must be creative and tricky when deciding on a way to catch them.  Remember, there is no right way to build a leprechaun trap.

Creating your trap:

You can make a trap using a variety of household items such as: string, boxes, netting, foil, glue, tape, empty paper towel tube, shoebox, plastic bottle, cereal box, etc.  Be creative!  Use items you already have.  You don’t have to buy new materials.

Helpful hints:

  1. Rainbows are good to use
  2. Color your trap and decorate it with green items (stickers, glitter, etc.)  Leprechauns feel comfortable when surrounded by green.
  3. Four leaf clovers.
  4. Lucky charms cereal.

Remember, leprechauns are small. Don’t make your trap too big!

We will be setting out the traps on Thursday March 15 in hopes of catching a leprechaun on Friday morning, March 16. There is no guarantee we will catch one, but we’ll try!  We will be talking about our projects, and each student will tell us how their trap works.

Good luck everyone.  Let’s do our best!

Mr. Hugh Branstetter
